Phillies Oddballs - 1967 Safe Driving Cards

1967 Phillies Safe Driving Set

The 1967 Phillies were only three years removed from the near-miss 1964 season - with many familiar faces still on the roster.  Led by Manager Gene Mauch the Phils finished above .500 for the sixth consecutive season with an 82-80 record.  Despite retaining the core of their successful run, and adding notable names such as former league MVP Dick Groat and All-Star Bill White the team continued to slide downward from that pinnacle of 1964.

According to the Standard Catalog of Vintage Cards, the 13-card 1967 Phillies Safe Driving set was the only traffic safety set of the decade.  The 2 3/4"x 1 1/4" cards feature black and white photos with superimposed autographs on the front.  The photos used in the cards also appeared in several other sets of the era. Card backs feature short player bios printed in blue, with a safety shield at the bottom-center.  The cards are unnumbered - but, do feature the player's uniform number.  Most times you find them used as the card number.
